1987 Nostalgia viewing party

I'm not saying that these are the best 1987 has to offer, I am saying that if I could go back to 1987 this weekend, this is exactly what I'd watch:

  • Starcom | 1987 | Saturday Morning Cartoon: this was one of those cartoons that was a spin off from a line of toys. The toys had a wide range of characters... but the cartoon typically focused on 3 main characters. This may not be the definitive cartoon of 1987, but it is one I watched enough to send me back to 87 any time an episode turns up on youtube.
  • Prince of Darkness | 1987 | Saturday Matinee: Anything with John Carpenter & Donald Pleasance is worth watching... as is anything with John Carpenter, Victor Wong & Dennis Dun. This one falls apart at the end but it makes a great afternoon matinee. This movie was my introduction to Alice Cooper. He was frightening. He did good.
  • The Lost Boys | 1987 |  Monstervision: I heard the soundtrack a few days ago and as a kid I must've listened to it more than I remember because I knew every word to every song. And what a great movie. Sam & the Frog Brothers stole the show... so did Star. Edward Herman, as always, was just awesome. I really wish I had been able to meet that man. He seems like he'd've been a genuinely good guy. You could argue that Near Dark was the better vampire movie from 87, but the Lost Boys is a true nostalgic masterpiece.
  • Friday the 13th, the Series | 1987 - 1990 | Late night fright: Oh my lands, this show was the best 1987 had to offer. Ryan Dallion was my hero. I wanted to hang out with Jack Marshak & Micki Foster. I wanted to drive that stretch Mercedes Benz. And I really wanted to track a cursed object. This show came on late & to this day, it still plays better after midnight than at any other time of day. The best episodes were Scarlet Cinema and 13 O'Clock, followed closely by Wax Magic, Scarecrow or the Pirate's Promise. True these episodes played after '87, but that's fine...
