For this year's foreign language film fest, I've decided to see how foreign films stack up against similar domestic counterparts.
Round 1: Hell vs the Book of Eli.
Two post apocalyptic journeys across an unforgiving wasteland. if the harsh elements don't get you, the locals will.
Hell had a simpler story… they're just looking for a source of water. Normally I like that simplicity, but in this case I think Eli won because the story had a purpose and showed its resolution (thought I coulda done without that set up for a sequel final ending).
Winner: the Book of Eli
Round 2: Cargo vs Pandorum
Pandorum = Starlost - Red Dwarf
Cargo = Alien - an alien
Winner: Pandorum
Round 3: The Orphanage vs the Others
A matriarchal haunted house stories where Mom fights the great unknown to keep the little kiddos safe. Both had mysterious elements with implications that only become clear after the big reveal. Both have similar endings though they come about it from a different direction.
The orphanage has a few slight advantages. Among other things, the main apparition was a kinda cool horror icon; the story wasn't as captive to setting up the twist ending; best of all, there's this really great moment where someone gets hit by a bus which is always good for a start.
Winner: the Orphanage
